Morrill dominates Sire Stakes action at Buffalo

Hamburg, NY---Jim Morrill, Jr. was hard at work Saturday night (July 24) at Buffalo Raceway, as he guided four out of seven winners in the New York Sire Stakes, for two-year-old trotting colts and geldings worth approximately $20,195 in each division.

The most memorable drive actually came on a horse he wasn’t even scheduled to drive, as trainer John Hallett put him on Typical Newyorker (Conway Hall-Striking Sibyl) in the first division leaving from post eight. Typical Newyorker broke stride right at the start of the race and was last, 14 lengths behind Bless America (Kevin Cummings) at the quarter-pole, which was hit in :32.1, over a track rated good, that had plenty of moisture in it.

It was a long and slow march to the front, but a sensational :29.4 last quarter-mile put Typical Newyorker 4-1/4 lengths ahead of second place finisher Tropic Storm (John Wagner) at the finish line.

It was the second straight NYSS victory for Typical Newyorker ($6.70), who was timed in 2:06.2 over the boggy going.

“The slow fractions and the off track, really helped me get back in the race”, said Morrill. “This is a really fast horse, but I had to be careful because I didn’t want him to break again”.

Morrill’s other Sire Stakes winners were, Petruchio (Plesac-Portia) ($3.30), who won a division in 2:05.2, Rarely Ordinary (Conway Hall-Mostly Super), ($2.10) won for his first lifetime win in 2:03.3, and Lucid Thoughts (Cash Hall-Dream Street) ($3.20), who also won for the first time, splashing a mile in 2:07.

The fastest mile of the night was turned in by Ray Schnittker’s All In Tad (Conway Hall-Trapezius) ($5.20), who covered the mile in 2:02.1 for his first lifetime win.

Driver Brandon Simpson had his picture taken with Quantum Cashman (Cash Hall-Neon Hall) ($4.60), who trotted in 2:06.2 for owners Trevor Henry and Dan McCann of Ontario, Canada.

Pay The Winner (Credit Winner-Prize Chip) ($2.20), remained undefeated in three lifetime starts, as former Western New York regular Sam Schillaci guided the gelding to an impressive win in 2:03.

Racing will resume on Sunday July 25, with first post scheduled for 1:05 P.M.
