Newberry Winner goes Coast to Coast in Buffalo Feature
Hamburg, NY---In the $9,000 Fillies and Mares Open Handicap Pace, Newberry Winner, ($9.00) a six-year-old Village Jove offspring, made every pole a winning one beating six rivals in 2:00.4, for her second win of the 2010 campaign, for owner Howard M. Ouriel, of Rochester NY.
Capably driven by Jamie Dunlap, Newberry Winner, cut all the fractions in the race, :28.4, 1:00.4, and 1:31.3. One length back in second were Shaniaraider and driver Ken Holliday, while Pembroke Primo (Kevin Cummings) came in third.
“I let them chase us tonight”, said Dunlap. “The last two weeks, I was just tired of trying to make up all the ground”.
Trained by Neal Russo, the $4,500 share of the winning purse put Newberry’s Winner’s season bankroll at $9,150, and $137,394 lifetime.
In Friday’s $9,000 Open Trot, Old Trafford ($9.20) a Meadow’s invader received a perfect garden spot trip from driver Kevin Cummings, then used the passing lane, to register his first win of the season in 2:02.3.
Mark Jakubik, and trainer John Cummings, Sr., own the six-year-old S J’s Photo horse, which beat second place finishers Jack Sparrow and reinsman Jim McNeight by 1-1/2 lengths. St Regis Hall (Jamie Dunlap) came in the show spot.
Driver Kevin Cummings was the hot driver on this bitterly cold winter evening, steering home four winners. Besides Old Trafford, Kevin won with Rusty’s Doll ($8.90), Time By Sevens ($2.50), and New Party ($5.10).
Racing will resume on Saturday, January 30, with first post scheduled for 6:40 p.m.
